LearningSpring School
New York City, New York

Spectrum Award Logo
Challenge: LearningSpring School is a NYC independent school for children who have been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, more specifically with Asperger Syndrome. The Board of Trustees wanted to create an award, to be given each year at their annual fundraising benefit, to honor those who had made a significant contribution in their advocacy to this cause.

Solution: In naming this award The Spectrum Award,
I intended to recognize the broad scope of this overall diagnosis, while at the same time indicate the vast differentiation existing between those who have received this diagnosis. Using the colorful spectrum as a visual representation was intended to diminish the negative impact often associated with "being on the spectrum".

Textron Chambers Academy
Providence, Rhode Island

Annual Appeal
Challenge: To solicit end-of-year donations at the same time that most not-for-profits are doing the same thing!

Solution: This is a charter school for inner city kids who make a commitment to their education and plan on earning a high school education. This appeal coincided with the 2008 presidential election. By showing the diversity of students right up front at a time when America had just voted in it’s first Afro-American President I hoped to convey that his dream could now be their dream.

Invitation
Challenge: The school decided to hold it’s first-ever Alumni Reunion! How to help graduates know what it was about and what they could gain by attending became the challenge.

Inside
Challenge: How to demonstrate the integration of The Children's Garden into the math, science, and health and wellness curricula and showcase the multi-lingual culture of the school.

Solution: The garden generated a crop of more than 21 vegetables, fruits, and herbs during the summer of 2010. Parents were asked to contribute family recipes that included at least one of something grown in the garden. All recipes were printed in a color-coded (English in blue, Spanish in orange, and Portuguese in green) format, illustrations made by students, and sparkling photographs were included to highlight the unique qualities of this wonderful school.

Brochure, Inside
Challenge: The International Charter School is unique for its 50/50 bilingual, dual language instructional model, in which students learn in English and Spanish, or English and Portuguese. The administration wanted to begin informing the parent body about some of the ways additional funds are acquired and by example open thoughts to ways for families to consider donations and contributions that will enhance both the programs and financial standing of the school.

Invitation
Challenge: The school had a new logo designed and decided to use its launching as an occasion to make an end-of-the-year party for students, faculty, and parents.

Solution: A Save-The-Date “teaser” hinted at the impending disappearance of the old logo and the arrival of something new. The invitation artwork – well hopefully, it speaks for itself!

The Lowell School
Flushing, New York

Brochure
Challenge: Although an independent school in NYC, students tuition is funded by Board of Ed funds and parents are therefore not accustomed to being solicited for donations that will support aspects of the schools financial well-being that are not included in the tuition reimbursement rate. Many parents expressed confusion about the variety of requests they were receiving and where these additional funds would be directed. Solution: “Mr. Confused Guy” expresses the concern of parents. The explanations inside the brochure match the colors of the separate thought bubbles on the cover as the text explains each aspect of fundraising needs.

The Summit School
New York City

Magnet
Challenge: This independent NYC school added a 5,000 square foot addition to the Upper School during the summer of 2009. We wanted to distribute a souvenir at the Groundbreaking ceremony. Solution: Inexpensive (500 for $100) refrigerator magnet.

Donor Campagin
Challenge: Devise a way for families who are unable to commit to multi-year larger campaign gifts able to make one-time gifts at the level with which they are most comfortable.

Solution: Prepare a “shopping list” that includes all the items that will be needed to outfit the classrooms in the new addition. By offering a variety of price levels people can “opt in” rather than “opt out” of the fundraising campaign efforts.

Invitation, Front
Challenge: The Summit School held a series of cultivation gatherings to educate its parent body about the capital campaign it had just launched. They needed an invitation that would remind parents that the success of the Summit program is the result of astute planning for the specific needs of Summit students and compel them to attend the party.
